What We’re Playing: Brain Games

Filed under Online Games, What we're playing

Playing online games are a great way to pass the time but I’ve always been a believer that if you can kill 2 birds with one stone then you probably should. While in this case I am not trying to take down any of our feathered friends, I have figured out a way to keep myself from being bored while also getting smarter at the same time. Over here at Shockwave, we have a plethora of brain games that are great for working out your memory, your vocabulary and your brain in general. With that being said, this Sunday is also the birthday of the late Albert Einstein, a man whose name and persona have been synonymous with genius for some time now. It would only make sense to play some brain games for Albert so for this episode of “What We’re Playing”, get ready to play games that will keep your gears turning and your brain learning.

One thing that people don’t tend to like about brain games is that sometimes they can be a little tricky. The ideal game is one that grows with your progress. As soon as you begin to understand how it works and how to succeed at it, new gaming challenges keep you on your toes. Bloxors is a great example of a game that won’t get you down too much at the beginning but as you play it will surely test your brain’s ability to make quick decisions.

Looking for something a bit more wordy? Crosswords, Word Round Up Challenge , and Super Word Scrapers are all perfect titles for the gamer looking to build up his or her vocabulary. Another great thing about these games is that they offer new puzzles daily, giving your brain something new to work with every day. These daily plays are a great way to mix up your brain work out and keep you interested in what you’re doing. Before you know it, they become part of your every day routine.

If you’re more of a numbers kind of gamer then have no fear, Shockwave is here for all the number junkies. With games like Hidato Daily Adventure, Kakuro, and Sudoku, you’ll be crunching numbers and looking for patterns right away. Numbers are not my cup of tea but I have noticed that with some practice, even I have gotten pretty good at these. In the end, it’s all worth the time I put in because I know its giving my frontal lobe a proper work out as well.

We have problem solvers too! Icebreaker Red Clan, and Power Up, will test your critical thinking skills to their limits. You’ll have to use your environments in these games to come out on top.

Regardless of which games you chose to play, you can never go wrong with challenging your mind. If you are looking for games that gives back, then Shockwave will always have you covered. Remember to have patience with these games and that they are supposed to be fun! The more fun you have with them, the more you are sure to learn. Thanks for playing with us again and we’ll see you next time here on the Spark with more of the best from Shockwave.com.

What We’re Playing: the Romance of Travel

Flowers, candy, and jewelry are nice, but for this girl nothing screams romance more loudly than travel. Flowers die, candy brings short-term pleasure and adds long-term inches (unless it’s dark chocolate, then all bets are off), and jewelry gets lost or sometimes stolen. Travel is different, it is experiential and has almost unlimited potential. When traveling near or far you are guaranteed a different state of mind, a new perspective, the opportunity to learn something new, and of course, memories and photos to share with friends and loved ones. If I could, I would travel all the time, but the reality is that this is not possible. My day to day travel destinations are often limited to home and office, until I log onto Shockwave.com. With my favorite destination for free online gaming even the sky is not the limit for how far I can travel from the comfort of my own chair. I must admit that the only thing I hate about traveling is packing, and with Shockwave.com I can leave my suitcase at home, make myself my favorite drink and take myself wherever I want with one click.

Ah, Venice! Gondolas, curvy little cobblestone streets, criss-crossing bridges and shape-shooting puzzle games? Yes, with Venice Deluxe I get to play games in one of the most romantic Italian city on Shockwave.com. I have to confess, after playing this game I have to suppress the urge to talk with a fake Italian accent.

However, Rome is my favorite Italian city hands down. I love Rome not just for its myriad charming piazzas (one of my favorites is Campo de’ Fiori, brimming with cafes and bars), and its amazing museums filled with gorgeous artistic treasures. My favorite aspect of Rome is that it’s impossible to walk down the street without stepping on history, without discovering a new wonder of times past around every corner. With Romance of Rome on Shockwave I get to have my favorite part of Rome without the jetlag. In this wonderful download game I get to travel to ancient Rome and explore the ancient civilization as it must have been thousands of years ago. The graphics are so amazing; it’s easy to not only lose track of time, but of centuries.

I’ve never been to Australia, and I want to go, desperately and badly. Tickets are expensive, the flight is long, and there are not enough vacation days. That’s when Big City Adventure: Sydney, Australia comes to my rescue. With just one click of the mouse on Shockwave.com, one of my favorite download travel games takes me far away and down under to discover Sydney. After playing this online game, I end up calling everyone at the office “mate” for days.

There are lots of magical places to visit out there, but I must admit that I’ve left my heart in San Francisco, once and for all. Yes, it’s true, I live and work in this wonderful city, but that just contributes to my ever-growing love of its hills, cable cars and tucked away hidden staircases leading to magnificent and unexpected views. One of my favorite things to do is walk around San Francisco, exploring and discovering new alleys, buildings, and vista points. The city is constantly changing, so there is always something new. However, sometimes I’m just too tired to get out of the house (or out of the office) and explore. That’s when I fire up Big City Adventure: San Francisco , one of Shockwave’s many free online games. My energy may fail me (or laziness may win), but Shockwave.com is always right there, ready to show me the sights and splendors of my favorite city. Playing Big City Adventure: San Francisco on Shockwave I not only get to be a tourist in my own city from the comfort of my couch, but also learn interesting facts about SF in the process.

I hope by now you’ve understood the beauty of traveling through games on Shockwave.com. It’s simple, quick and fun! However, the real beauty is that along with travel to real-world places you get to travel to a variety of fantasy destinations as well. For instance, you can start with a reality-based fantasy of a wedding in Vegas, and explore that fantasy further with Dream Day Wedding – Via Las Vegas on Shockwave. If you didn’t like the hotel accommodations on your last trip, you get to take the matter into your own hands and create the hotel of your dreams with Jane’s Hotel and Passport to Paradise on Shockwave. No destination is too big, too small, or too expensive! Even if you’d like to lay on the beach while playing games like bingo somewhere sunny and warm when it’s snowing outside, we’ve got you covered with Beach Towel Bingo, a Shockwave exclusive premium game from Club Shockwave.

Ah, so many trips and places and so little time! With Shockwave.com the romance of travel doesn’t need to be penciled in or scheduled months in advance. All the wonderful travel games and free online games are there waiting, so what are you waiting for? Stop reading and get in the game!

2009 Shockwave Staff Favorites

It’s hard to believe that 2009 is almost over. We just got started, and… it’s almost time to ring in 2010. We had a lot of fun this year bringing you the best free online games and download games from across the globe, searching through thousands for just the right titles for you to enjoy. We really hope that each week everyone found something new they could play or discovered another favorite title to enjoy again and again on Shockwave.

While the staff here doesn’t like to play favorites since we play every single game that comes out (tough, I know, but someone has to do it) many of us did find ourselves coming back to certain games over and over again.

Michael, our producer extraordinaire, couldn’t stop burnin’ rubber in Burning’ Rubber 3 . “Who would have thought you could play a home console style game on the web? This game has it all: high speed racing, weapons, boss battles, random explosion powerups, daily challenges, car customization, and even a tank. The only thing this game doesn’t have is a literal kitchen sink. Everything else is in here. And if you can find all the hidden packages, my hat goes off to you. Word is that it unlocks something you never thought you’d see in a car race game.”

.
.

Jessie, our marketing maven, fell in love with The Clockwork Man. “I think this beautifully- designed hidden object game is a cut above the rest. In addition to being great to look at thanks to sumptuous scenery and fun characters, the added bonus of fresh new navigation features like scrolling and zooming in on scenes makes it a pleasure to play. A Jules Verne-style adventure story with flying airships and robots contributes to the true uniqueness of the game.”
.
.
.

John, our product guy and fearless leader, got wrapped up in Freestyle21. “I’ll admit – this game ate into my work productivity a little bit. The concept is simple – make as many 21’s as you can as fast  as you can from a full deck of cards – but the time pressure and ‘winning swimmer’ bonus combine to make this a fun new challenge every time. When Club Shockwave first launched, a co-worker and I got into a heated competition on the leaderboards. I’m proud to say I won that challenge, but still have a long way to go to beat the overall top players.  My best is 2,147 – can you beat it?”
.
.

Justine, the mistress of marketing and resident foodie couldn’t get enough of Youda Sushi Chef . “What starts out as a comfortably paced sushi restaurant, with only a few types of maki on the menu, eventually turns into sushi making mayhem. Don’t get me wrong, the game provides almost enough time to grasp the new recipes introduced as you progress through the levels, but it’s the continuous ordering of supplies, the clearing of the dishes and the take-out orders that will have you repeating levels and if you’re like me, missing hours of required sleep. With tons of decorative upgrades and new kitchen accessories to choose from, this online game will keep you entertained for hours.”
.
.

Dana, our download games producer, fell in love with Aveyond: Lord of Twilight . “It has everything I could want from a game: an engaging story, rounded characters, action, and gameplay that requires a little strategy. It’s a great homage to the classic RPGs I grew up on, and I was so happy to see some overlap between classic action games and the ever-evolving casual games world. As soon as this game launched, I immediately downloaded it at home, along with the previous Aveyond games so I could get caught up! With all the great Aveyond games, as well as the ones yet to come, they’re sure to give you many hours of great gaming entertainment!”

.
.

As for me, it was really hard to choose just one game. Shockwave has the perfect game for
every mood, every time of day, and every weather (can you tell I’m a fan?). But, when it came down to it, my fave for 2009 had to be Hedgehog Launch 2. With roots from the former Soviet Union, I have a special place in my heart for hedgehogs and space exploration. Hedgehog Launch 2 beautifully makes fun of both with great sarcasm, fast-paced action and an adorable hedgehog. Forget about pigs flying, this is about a faster, pricklier hog with ambitions for Mars!

What were your favorites in 2009? Let us know in the comments, we would love to play your favorite free online games and download games! 2010 is almost here and that means we can all look forward to many new game discoveries.

What We’re Playing: Thanksgiving Edition.

Eat. Drink. PLAY. And be merry!

Thanksgiving is upon us once again, a time for reflection, a time to show your appreciation, and a time to stuff your face with turkey. Hey, it is tradition, and I’m not one to argue with roughly 388 years of history. Plus, cooking and eating are definitely a few of my favorite things! The other one is, of course, playing games on Shockwave.com.

If I’m not in the kitchen prepping a feast or bellied up to the table, you’ll find me with friends and family visiting Shockwave.com for all the online games I can handle. With temperatures dropping and fires crackling, ‘tis the season to kick back, relax, and play games.

Here are a few of my favorite free online games to share with friends and family before and after our big feast. Some are Thanksgiving-related. Some are food-related. The rest of these flash games are just downright addictive.

Turkey Fling – With turkey overload during Thanksgiving it feels really GOOD to hurl (them)! This game is as hilarious as it is addictive. Launch your turkey and send it flying as far as you can. Grab corn to help your flap meter and crackers for a special boost. Watch out for hazards along the way like snowballs, pointy forks, gooey pies, and jelly traps! The further you fly, the more you’ll discover. There are 17 special landing places. (Hint: Make it to space for more power-ups.)

Cooking Academy – I love this game because it’s like training before the big dinner, but it’s the kind of school that will make you lick your fingers. You’re going to need your oven mitts for this fun-filled game Chop, knead, fry, and mash your way through culinary school as you prepare more than 50 different recipes. Make the grade and you’ll unlock new recipes and earn trophies. There are also food trivia and mini games to keep the fun boiling.

Let’s Get Cookin’ – This is my favorite way to procrastinate before actually making the Thanksgiving feast. Head into the kitchen to prepare delicious meals using just your mouse. First, you’ll find ingredients, then slice them and dice them, and finally blend, fry, boil and bake them into 10 mouth-watering recipes. You can even print them out! This is one of the most delicious multiplayer games  around, so play with the whole family guilt-free!

Jigsaw Puzzles: Fabulous Foods! – Who says you can’t play with your food? Fun has never looked tastier with these popular downloadable games. Arrange and re-arrange pieces of food to your heart’s content, there are 60 puzzles and 4 difficulty levels to satisfy your appetite and no mess to clean up after. Each puzzle features mouthwatering imagery and rewards you with a relevant recipe or fun food fact when you’ve put the pieces together.

Two Minute Football 3D 2010 – I can’t say that I’m a sporty gal, but even I can’t resist two minutes of football. All the action is back with kickoff returns, tap control for realistic tackle breaking and dragging, a wind feature for more challenging passing and kicking, and other features that’ll make you an even bigger fan. Choose College, Pro, or All-Pro mode, and customize your playbook and players. If you’re good enough to score 21 points in 2 minutes, you’ll advance. With Two Minute Football 3D 2010, I don’t want to watch the game, I want to play it!

Family Feud™ – Every family’s got something to feud about and my family and I like to do it while playing another title on Shockwave.com’s list of must-play downloadable games, Family Feud offers hours of fun for all ages. Answer questions and see if your responses match the survey. The more you match, the more points you’ll earn. Race the clock in the Fast Money Round to pick up huge points. You can play solo, with a friend, or challenge other teams in this game show classic! My favorite way to play is to gather the whole family.

With titles like this, it’s hard not to be merry at Shockwave.com, one of the most popular destinations for online games. Not to mention Club Shockwave and Shockwave Unlimited, which take gaming to a whole new level. It’s going to be a good Thanksgiving.

Halloween is almost here and I’m spending my last moments before Trick or Treating (yes, I still go Trick or Treating) with all the Shockwave Monsters.  I’ve gathered them all up in one place where they’re waiting to shoot, hit and run and finally R.I.P. Whether you’re up for a grave shift, in the mood to pop some eye balls, or want to become The Pretender I’ve got you covered.

If you’re not scarred enough, there are some Spooky Download Specials.   I’m enjoying some legendary stories by the campfire, peeking into the Dracula Files and getting hooked on the spooktacular Fishdom sequel.

However, I must confess that my all-time Halloween game favorites are the special treats found in Daily Jigsaw and The Daily Diff.  Check ‘em out, ‘cause the special images and game trophies will be gone once the ghosts and zombies return to their graves.

Happy Halloween everyone!
