Carrie The Caregiver: HELP!

Did you ever have one of those days when you just wanted to crawl back into bed and fast- forward to tomorrow?

Well, today we’re firing up the new cooking pot. We sure do need it – business is booming, thank goodness – but it also means we have to step up our game once again. Chopping firewood, moving quicker, serving more customers, keeping ourselves in shape and simply staying organized takes a ton of effort. I know if I drop even one ball, the rest will come tumbling down. Yup, the pressure to stay cool, calm and collected is HUGE.

Between the chaos at the store, Will’s bad back, Pearl’s teething, Safi’s sullenness (sorry, sweetie!) and Peter’s girl troubles, I’m sort of feeling a little low on fuel. My emotional, physical and spiritual stores need to be topped up, A.S.A.P.

And that’s where my handsome and handy hubby Will comes in… by building us a fantastic new R&R shed. A place where we can all stop by every once in a while to get an instant fix of everything we need to keep ourselves in tip-top shape. (It really turned out great, too… no wonder his back is killing him!)

It’s my nature to focus on the needs of those around me first. That’s just who I am! But as parents, we also bear the brunt of everything that goes on in our families. That added pressure means we have a responsibility to take care of our own individual needs, too, or else we’ll be no good to anyone.

Don’t get me wrong – life with my big, fat blended family is fabulous… most of the time. But there are days when I simply crave some peace and quiet. No matter what, I am going to take a walk in the woods by myself after work today. The days are getting shorter and, pretty soon, winter will be here. I want to get out and enjoy the beauty that surrounds me.

That’s how I’m going to be good to myself this week.

Tricks and Tips: 2 Minute Football 3D X

Score quick to win big!

The return of football season is one of my favorite times of the year. For me, this means more tailgating, more mud football with my friends, and more of my favorite Shockwave football game, 2 Minute Football 3D X.

This awesome 3-D football game puts you on the field with only 2 minutes left, giving you the chance to score big points with even bigger plays. But after the college mode, how can you really be sure to shut down the defense? This blog post will dive into a few tips and tricks that just may help you win the big game and boost your overall score.

- You only have 2 minutes to score in the game, so clock management means everything! Long runs eat up lots of clock, so try throwing diagonal passes towards the sidelines. If your player can get out of bounds with the ball, then the clock will stop!

- Don’t forget about the field goal! I know we all want to throw that Hail Mary pass for an extra 6, but you have to remember that a field goal is an automatic 3 if you are close enough! In a close game, those points could come in handy at the end! Also, there is no shame in throwing the ball away! Avoid the sack and loss of yards! You’ll get them on the next down!

- Practice makes perfect: use the practice mode ‘til you can linkup perfectly with your receivers. It doesn’t take long to master, and you will enjoy the bigger game scores!

- Finally, speed matters: you might be able to connect with the long pass, but you will need speed to break that last tackle. Building up speed will help you find the end zone, so take that into account once you have the ball in your hands!

Use these tips to your advantage, and you just might excel in this fast paced football challenge. The high score is currently at 2010 in College mode. Think you can beat it? Test your gridiron skill with 2 Minute Football 3D X and find out!

So much to do!

So much to do!

Good news all around today, everyone.

Now that the fall foliage has started to turn, tons of tourists are stopping by for a taste of our famous fruits, juices and jams. Yup – we’re busier than ever, but I think we’re finally getting into the swing of things here at Carrie and company’s crazy country store :)

Amazingly, the orchard seems to be even more productive than we are… we’ve got fresh yellow lemons thrown into the mix now, too! As soon as I saw them ripening on the trees, I knew we’d better prepare to kick it up a notch. So I recruited Will and the kids to keep the shop-fires burning and ordered a second kiln. (I like to put my speedy hubby on jar-making duty, which helps prevent a backlog when those long lineups start.)

The countryside is just so beautiful here this time of year…. I’d really like to squeeze in a hike or a bike ride this week. On second thought, maybe not. Lately I’ve been way too tired to enjoy the, um, fruits of my labor. Grettle rightly suggested we open up the store earlier to accommodate the influx of new customers. Which is also why we missed breakfast a few times this week, trying to get used to the new schedule.

Family’s good, too… Will and I are solid, and the kids seem to be settling in a bit better at school. Peter has basketball tryouts soon, which Will’s really happy about since he was a point guard back in high school himself. (I have a feeling Peter’s motives lie more with the cheerleaders than love of the game, but hey – boys will be boys!). Even Safi decided to join the school paper. I think it’ll be a great way for her to come out of her shell and meet some new people.

Who knows? Maybe she’ll write a story about the family business…

Hey everyone… hope you’re all enjoying the last days of summer. Wish I could say I’ve had some time to smell the roses – or rather, the apple blossoms! – but lately, our country jam seems way busier than life in the city ever was.

Long lineups and short tempers have found me a little more stressed out than usual, to be honest, and I finally realized why: I was running myself ragged all day long. At first, I brought in reinforcements – with me, Will, Safi and Peter working the store, I figured keeping the customers happy would be a piece of cake. Turns out it’s not that simple.

Maintaining my physical energy with a rest or a snack wasn’t enough, either; I’ve got to keep my spirits up, too. For me, it turns out staying connected to my loved ones requires more than just sitting down to dinner together every night… our social well-being needs constant care and replenishment in order for us to handle the daily ups and downs with style and grace.

The solution? Checkers and chit-chat! Putting a board out was Grettle’s idea, and it really works wonders :) Taking a break from the cooking and the customers to spend a few moment just chatting, one-on-one, with Will or one of the kids really does wonders to lift my spirits and recharge my batteries.

This is why we came here, after all… to get to know each other once more and pull together as a team. To let the business of running the store and the huge and, quite frankly, unexpected success it has become get in the way of that goal would defeat the whole point!

As a family, we’re at a crossroads, but we’re figuring it all out together, one day at a time…

Long before I ever joined the Shockwave team, I was a huge fan of the site that was the original home for online, on-demand gaming.  It’s hard to believe, but it’s been over 10 years since Shockwave.com started introducing people to their first web gaming experience.  It’s amazing how gaming has become so core to so many people’s lives since then - from the introduction of casual download games, to connected consoles, to online worlds, mobile and social networks - games are weaving their way into all of our lives in new and exciting ways.  As I write this, the most popular app on Facebook and 7 of the top 10 free apps on the iTunes store are games.

All this translates to a growing opportunity to find just the right gaming experiences for you. It also translates to a lot of sorting through to find the games you love and the stuff you want to spend your time and/or hard-earned money on.  Shockwave has always been focused on bringing you the best games at the best value, whether it’s our giant catalog of free-to-play online games or our ‘all you can eat’ Shockwave Unlimited subscription service that gives you full access to 700+ download games all for one low monthly price. Today we are taking that commitment to value one step further, and introducing the absolute best way to buy low priced games.  We are now offering the majority of our premium download games - over 700 to choose from - for only $6.99 each.  No, this isn’t a sale price.  No, this isn’t for a limited time. This is our commitment to bringing you low priced games every single day.

So, we’ve hit the major headline.  I wouldn’t blame you if you’d already stopped reading and gone to start loading up, but for those of you who are still here, you’re probably wondering ”why?  Why go from $19.95 all the way down to $6.99?”  I’m glad you asked.  Put simply, we want you to play more games. A lot more games.  See, we love games and as the rest of the world continues to join us in this love affair, more and more awesome content is being created. Our job is to bring you the best of what’s out there and make sure that you are experiencing as much of what you love as possible - whether it’s time management games, hidden object, matching, action, puzzles or anything else you enjoy.  We want you to get the most entertainment you can possibly get for your money, and we want to be the people to help you do that.

So, if you’re the type who wants to try a little bit of everything but not have to buy anything, we’ve got you covered with Shockwave Unlimited for as little as $4.95/month (that’s still less than the cost of a single download game, for access to 700+ existing games and up to 20 new ones every month. Not to mention access to all the benefits of Club Shockwave).  Or, if you’d rather buy low priced games individually, you can now get ‘em for just $6.99 every single day.  By the way, that is $6.99 and you’re free - there’s no obligation to buy new games, no confusing virtual currency/coin system, no strings - just buy the game(s) and you’re done until you decide to come back and buy some more.

I hope you’re as excited about this as we are, and hope you’ll use it as an excuse to play more games. Seriously, they’re good for you.

Until next time,

Coming Soon: Redline Rumble 4

There are few games out there that offer a hair-raising thrill ride with crazy twists and turns that  make you hold on to your keyboard for dear life.  The Redline Rumble series blew me away the first time I sat down to play it, and though I was a pretty terrible racer, I just could not stop playing as I was hooked on the thrill of the chase.  Now, it is my immense pleasure to announce that a new installment in this awesome racing series is coming out exclusively on Shockwave September 15th!  The game is jam packed with new surprises and features that are sure to thrill not just the seasoned Redline Rumbler, but pretty much anyone who’s ready for a great joy ride.

While we can’t yet take Redline Ruble 4 out for a spin, we can at least get the best inside scoop from the creator of this racing classic himself, Richard Smith.

The Spark: How has the Redline Rumble Series evolved over the last 3 games?

Richard Smith: The races have evolved from crude linear freeways to track like curves, and finally to a full open 3D world with working traffic flow encompassing a vast geographical area giving far greater gameplay variety.

The Spark: Yes, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the Rumbling worlds that you’ve created for us!  So what’s new in Redline Rumble 4?

Richard Smith: Full multi layered environments are the biggest addition, enabling you to race around car parks, inside aircraft hangars, over roofs and under traffic tunnels. You can even play chicken with a landing 747 Passenger Jet!

The Spark: Wow, that’s crazy! You have a great imagination! What RR4 feature is your favorite and why?

Richard Smith: Boosting off the raised bridge near the dockyards is my favorite moment in the game, for sheer airborne thrills.

The Spark: From the little that I’ve been privileged to see so far, it looks like the game has a super interesting setting that is a combination of many famous cities.  Can you give us a quick tour?

Richard Smith: IgNitro City is in fact a mutant combination of real and imagined places and architecture. Cisco style hills, NY style financial district and traffic lights, LA style runway, Chicago style docks and so on, with some humorous parody buildings and fictitious companies to spice things up a bit. The Nerd Burger Ring pokes fun at the famous Nurburgring race track in Germany. The ‘Gould & Gates Bridge’ looks very familiar. Wellard Hardware has a sky scraper shaped like screwdriver. The cosmetics headquarters takes the form of a giant lipstick. Lunkopf & Stubbs has cigarette and lighter shaped building with an ash tray roundabout. I’ll leave people to work out what the ‘Sunny Pierce Toole’ Legal Office building is based on…

The Spark: Wow, the anticipation is totally killing me!  You must have had a lot of fun creating Redline Rumble 4! Can you share a funny production story with the Redline Rumble fans?

Richard Smith: I probably work in the smallest home game studio in the world (no prizes for guessing what use the room had before I converted it). My midi keyboard touches the walls each side. But like a techno-monk in my cyber-cell I have everything I need to zone out and create the complex code and graphics for each game. Things get really interesting when my 3 step-kids all pile in at once trying to help me ‘Beta test’ the current build.   :)

The Redline Rumble 4 production is racing up to the finish line, so I’ll let the creator and his team of testers get back to the game.  In the meantime, you can prepare yourself for the RR4 challenge by sharpening your skills on the first 3 Redline Rumble adventures: Redline Rumble, Redline Rumble 2: Detonator, and Redline Rumble 3.
