Sunset Racer 2: Tips and Tricks

Hi there, I’m Jan, the Queen of Drift-Cornering in Sunset City and QA Engineer at Shockwave. I’m back to tell you my favorite tips and tricks for Sunset Racer 2.

Drift-Cornering is all a matter of anticipating the turns early, while always keeping one hand on the handbrake (Shift key). Tap the Shift key, while turning with the arrow keys, and the rear end will swing out to help you drift around a turn. Hold the Shift key down while turning hard, and you’ll skid around sharper corners. For those killer-sharp hairpins and zigzags, try letting go of the accelerator early; then hit the Shift key, while turning at the same time; then, while you’re skidding, punch the accelerator hard. Your car will leave that turn behind and zing off like a stung horse. Feel the G’s! Feel the road claw at your tires! But try not to smash into the curb, or the other cars, in the process—they’ll slow you down sharply, not to mention make you look like a dweeb in front of your racing friends. The wipeouts are spectacular, but the best part is: nobody ever gets hurt.

Here’s some more insider info just for you: In the near future, we’ll also be adding a Story Mode where you’ll race against opponents: some of the toughest denizens of Sunset City’s underground street-racing scene. There are some rough customers that come out at night: some are nasty, and some are nice, but all of them are out to beat your record and steal your glory. When you do beat back all those would-be usurpers to your throne, you’ll earn Shockwave.com tokens and trophies for your trouble. Also planned for future release is a Race Editor, where you’ll be able to build your own races and use them to challenge your friends.

Who says castaways have all the fun? There’s just as much adventure and intrigue to be had navigating the jungle of family life. That’s right: Last Day of Work is back with Virtual Families, coming to Shockwave on May 6th!
The game starts out by letting you adopt the virtual friend of your choice, each of them with different likes, dislikes, careers, goals and personalities. Once you find your favorite, it’s time to move in! As they settle into their new home, they explore the uses of all the household objects, as well as discover some things that could use a little fixing up. The game even gives you a praising glove to reward them for good habits, and a scolding glove to discourage bad behavior. And with 48 unique collectibles to find and over 100 trophies to earn, there’s never a dull moment around the house!
Marriage proposals come in via email, which you can accept or reject based on the characters’ compatibility. As time goes on your virtual family grows up, grows bigger, and grows closer. They need your help to stay happy, advance their careers, and keep their family going for generations.
Much like its island predecessors, Virtual Families draws you in with cute characters, challenging problem-solving, and genuine personality. Right away, you feel a kinship with your virtual pal, and want to provide them with everything to create a happy, loving home. Virtual Families proves that suburban life can be every bit as tricky and rewarding as island living, with new puzzles to unravel and skills to acquire.
From the smallest case of sniffles to the hard-earned promotion, you’ll love sharing in all the ups and downs of virtual life! So who’s waiting for you? Come to Shockwave on Wednesday, May 6th to download Virtual Families and plant your own virtual family tree!

Twisting Text For Shakespeare!

If still alive today William Shakespeare would be 445 years old! With that being said, I was surprised that the United States doesn’t really do anything to commemorate one of the greatest writers that ever lived! Some cities are trying to change that calling April 23 “Talk like Shakespeare Day” . I just happen to think that this is an amazing idea and that we should all participate in twisting our talk and text for a day by taking our tongues’ back to the Renaissance.

This might sound a little easier than it actually is so I came up with 5 tips on how to sound more like Shakespeare! This way you can impress your friends with your fancy English and help keep the memory of the world’s favorite playwright alive. Share these with your friends and see how well you would fit in during the mid 1600’s.

1. Don’t say the word you, try saying thou. You can also say the word thee instead of saying y’all.
Ex: Thou should goeth to Shockwave.com and playeth many games! If thee plays games thou shall surly have fun!

2. Shakespeare spoke with dignity and some what of a poetic style often using rhymes in his work. Try adding a poetic feel to your words to make them more meaningful.
Ex: Shockwave.com is full of games, where high scores lead to online fame! Where no 2 days are quite the same and where thou logs in by user name!

3. If you get stuck and can’t think of what to say, simply add “eth” to the end of verbs! . Try it with some of the words you use every day! (see below for propper use)
Ex: Bob playeth, Bob scoreth, Bob wineth!

4. Use shortcuts where you can! There is no need for the word “it,” just use the letter “t” and fill it in appropriately.
Ex: Tis a glorious day to playeth games on Shockwave!

5. Finally to improving your vocabulary will surly help you sound even more long winded! I recommend playing TextTwist2. This new game will surly help your prose and will give you plenty to talk about.

If you follow my tips, and check out our game, thou will surly speaketh with the sweet sensual sound of Shakespeare himself. So the question can no longer be, “to be or not to be” but today “will you be or won’t you be” Talking like Shakespeare himself? I just dare thee to try!

UPDATE:
It has come to my attention here at the Spark that while attempting to have some fun with Shakespeare, I may have posted some information that may have been just a little off. I wanted to update this post with a couple of insights from some of our readers that may help your Shakespeare Speak in the future! We always appreciate feedback and I want to thank the people who responded to this post. We do this for you and we want to do it right!

*Shakespeare did not write in “Old English”. When you are speaking like Shakespeare, you are using “Modern English“. Even though it doesn’t sound like the English we speak today, if he was writing in old English, we wouldn’t have been able to understand him at all

When using Shakespeare’s modern English, be sure to watch out for a couple of things:
To sound like Shakespeare himself, try adding “st” onto appropriate words:
Ex: When thou playest and speakest, thou wilt sound as if the Bard himself.

*The ending “-eth” is only added to the third person singular present tense.
This makes my previous example incorrect. You should use it like this:

Ex: Ben playeth games on Shockwave.com.

Thanks again!

Remember your mama today! No, I’m not asking if you called your mother today (though that would be nice), I’m talking about our global mother Earth. Today is the 39th annual Earth Day , set aside in 1970 to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Planet where we work and play every day. Celebrated all across the globe, Earth Day is a day to stop and smell the roses, perhaps even plant one should you get so inspired. It’s also a Wednesday, so sometimes it’s hard to find time in the midst of everyday work, errands and chores to take a moment and appreciate gifts of nature. If you do find a second for a gaming break (you know you need one!), I invite you to join me is some good earthy games on Shockwave.

One of my favorites is Plant Tycoon, where you get to start with a handful of seeds and cultivate an empire by growing, letting your inner tycoon blossom. Garden Defense calls you to defend your virtual garden from pests in natural creative ways like wild lawn ornaments, and even bug-fighting plants! If you’re in the mood for a little country escape check out Ranch Rush where you get to experience life on the farm by planting crops, milking cows, gathering honey and much more to save the nursery from the clutches of big developers.  You’ll also win some tokens for your troubles, with a chance to win enough cash for a quite a few gifts of nature.

So remember our global Mama today when you play games. Who knows, perhaps you’ll have so much fun in the virtual world of gardening that you may get inspired to start a garden of your own. Happy Earth Day from Shockwave!

April 21st 753 BC: Rome Founded

Before you attempt to build your own Roman empire in The Cradle of Rome, we thought you might be interested in the story of how the historic city came to be.

According to legend, Numitor, the King of the ancient city of Alba Longa, was overthrown by his brother, Amulius. In order to protect his position, Numitor needed to eliminate any chance of being overthrown himself. This led to the attempted murder of his niece’s newborn twin sons, Romulus and Remus, who were next in line for succession to the throne. His efforts were unsuccessful, and the twins were rescued by a she-wolf (who else?) and were adopted and raised by a local shepherd.

After learning about their family history, the twins restored the original and rightful King to the throne and, to celebrate their victory, decided to build a city of their own. Unable to agree on location, they each constructed separate cities. A sibling rivalry developed when Remus teased his brother about his city’s poorly constructed walls, so Romulus killed him and threatened anyone who did the same. Romulus then named his city after himself and became the first King of Rome on April 21st 753 BC.

It took centuries for Rome to grow from a small city to an empire, but it should take you a little less time to build your own Rome in this beautiful match-three adventure. Collect resources like gold, food and supplies to construct your kingdom while clearing tiles. Keeping in mind what assets you’re required to collect in order to clear the board increases the strategic level of gameplay. This, along with the draining water jug that reminds you that your time is almost up makes this game highly addictive, with enough twists to keep you coming back for more.

On Friday, April 17th, Shockwave will release a hotly-anticipated new game: The Clockwork Man. This intriguing hidden object/role-playing adventure offers twists in both theme and gameplay that are sure to please.

The Clockwork man is set in a 19th century fantasy world that combines a Victorian aesthetic with futuristic industrial elements, such as flying airships and steam-powered robotic companions. The heroine of the story, Miranda Calomy, provides a refreshing break from traditional Victorian female stereotypes. She is educated and talented–the youngest in a long line of inventors. Her brains and engineering skills are put to the test during a mysterious assignment that takes her on a transcontinental voyage fraught with sabotage and suspense.

Breathtaking design and new ways of navigating scenes to find objects make The Clockwork Man a best-of-breed gaming experience. Features like scrolling through elaborate settings and zooming in to get a closer look provide a sense of being in a real 3D environment.  Mini-puzzles between scenes provide additional challenge and variety that keep the game addictive and well-paced.

The Clockwork Man will be available on Shockwave in just a few short days! In the meantime, here are some other great games that will get your hidden object skills in tip-top form.

Mortimer Beckett and the Time Paradox, Women’s Murder Club: A Darker Shade of Grey, and if you find the neo-Victorian costumes and scenery in The Clockwork Man appealing, you’ll love this fun “Steampunk” dress-up game on AddictingGames: Dress Me Up Clockwork Couture.

Racing in Sunset City with Jan

My daddy is a racing instructor. Fast cars are in my blood! But I haven’t owned or driven a single car (even a   rustbucket) in the past 14 years. Shockwave.com, where I work as a QA Engineer, is in San Francisco. When the real city you live in is crowded, expensive, and not too car-friendly, the best place to go get your vroom-vroom on is online, in Sunset City.

Shockwave.com is no stranger to Sunset City—we hosted the street-racing scene for the original Sunset Racer and Sunset Racer 1.x: Evolution, and now we’re shifting into high gear for Sunset Racer 2. This sequel to the popular series has been over a year in the making, and was produced by teams across two continents (and many many time zones). Sunset City is now filled with bigger cars, badder opponents, and better prizes. Now you can rip through a different daily race 365 days a year, as well as play past days’ races from the archives.   For every race there’s a new time of day, weather, and traffic conditions to get in your way. You might race multiple laps in the rain at dawn, or you might do a fast point-to-point burn in the bright afternoon sun.  You might be issued a temporary high-performance loaner car to race with, or you might be assigned to drive a garbage truck on the night shift. Trick out your car, beat the clock to win medals for each race, and then win enough upgrades and extras to trick out your car even more.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves with the glamour, here. You do not start out driving the hypersexy Yumsushi Sword F-15H , which is as shiny and fast and sleek-muscled as Christian Bale in that black rubber bodysuit he wore to be Batman. No, you start out—online as in real life—with a Rustbucket. It drives about as sexy as it looks. But don’t despair! You can win upgrade after upgrade, polish your skills, and beat your old times to move up in the ranks, until you get that top-of-the-line Feararo model. You’ll unlock a myriad of goodies on the way—from paint and stickers and window-tinting, to suspension and engine upgrades, to entire new cars. So don’t worry, you’ll ditch the Rustbucket soon enough. Each car handles differently, so there’s always something unexpected. (Here’s a beginners’ tip: Go check out Sunset Racer 1.x Evolution first, and your Sunset Racer 2 garage will contain a nice bonus!)

My own favorite Yumsushi racer is metallic frosted shock-pink, with a shock-green Fade paintjob on top and purple Skull patterns on the front, a Nuke sticker on the roof, bubble-pattern mirror windows, a spoiler the size of the Eiffel Tower, twin intakes, octo-exhausts, full power under the hood, and purple-and-green neon lights underneath the chassis. It’s so classy.

What’s yours? Stop reading this blog post, there’s racing and car-customizing to be done! Get out to Sunset City (only on Shockwave) and come back to let me know all about your favorite ride by commenting on this post.

Let’s Go Fly A Kite!

When’s the last time you flew a kite? No, seriously… Well, if you’re anything like me, it’s probably been a while (and if not, good for you!), until I started playing one of the newest, most awesomest games on Shockwave. That’s right it’s Kites! The game has a slew of colorful kites that take you on a trip through all of the different Club Shockwave games. It’s guaranteed not to leave you hanging. (Get it…Kites…Hanging.)

Pandas, penguins, pirates! Oh my! Those are just some of the cool kites you can expect to see flying around the board when you play this game. What’s so special about them you ask? Well, each one represents the theme of one of our new Club Shockwave games. This also makes the game extremely unique because it is the only one that can take you on a tour of all the new games! Think you can figure out which games the kites go with?

Kites! also has the only mutt on the block! And he knows tons of tricks (I taught him myself). He can sit, rollover, jump, play dead and.. Okay, maybe he doesn’t know a TON of tricks but he’s really cute. Be careful however because one of his favorite tricks is to run off with the new kites you just created (he is sneaky and fast)!  All of these things and more make Kites! a truly fun and unique game that I hope you will enjoy playing as much as I did creating!

Fooled Ya!

You may have also noticed that something was different about the two images.  Wait, was it?  After squinting and looking a little more closely, and then looking some more, you finally click somewhere with a small glimmer of hope.

That’s right, in the words of John V, Shockwave Diff-rolled you yesterday.  We had a ton of fun putting this little prank together for you.  Looks like you had a lot of fun too!  Here’s what some of you wrote in the reviews:

yowzasma: “Thank you so very much for the APRIL FOOL’S :) joke….I’m thinking that I needed new glasses and you-all made me laugh so hard that I nearly spilled my 3:45AM cup of wake-up coffee… Thanks for starting my day with a laugh, it sure felt good!”

lowachee: “Oh man, am I gullible. I was completely perplexed until I saw the other reviews. That was great!”

CARMENLOU: “Hard day at work today.  First time to play this game and I thought to myself: ‘I know I cannot be this stupid and this cannot be this hard…’  Great April Fool’s joke, I needed a good laugh.  Thanks for the great ending to my day.”

Thank you Shockwave Daily Diff players!  Reading all of your reviews was a great ending to my day.  Be sure to come back and check out the ‘Diff daily, because you never know what tricks we’ll have up our sleeves in the future!
